What is AIG Travel Guard Travel Insurance?

How do I purchase cover?

Can I purchase cover if I live outside The Republic of Ireland?

No, you have to be a resident of The Republic of Ireland for the last six months to avail of this particular travel insurance product.

How do I get my Policy Document?

Your Policy Document will be sent to you by email as soon as your payment details have been validated. A copy of the wording is also available for you to view online by simply clicking on the appropriate Policy Document icon.

Who do I contact in the event of a query under my insurance?

Do I have to carry a copy of my Policy Document with me when travelling?

Although you do not need to carry your Policy Document with you for cover to operate, we recommend that you bring it with you every time you travel. It is a particularly important document as among other things it provides you with details on what to do in the event of a medical emergency. In addition, some foreign medical providers may wish to see documentation before they will agree to treat you.

Where can I obtain a copy of my Policy Document?

A Policy Document and description of cover for the product you require can be found by clicking on the appropriate Policy Document icon along the side of the website.

When does my cover begin? When does it end?

The Single Trip cancellation protection will become effective immediately upon purchasing your insurance. If you have arranged an Annual Multi-Trip policy, cancellation protection starts at the time that you book the trip or the start date shown on your policy schedule, whichever is later. All cover and services for single trip cover will terminate when you return to Ireland or at the end of the period shown on your policy schedule, whichever is earlier. Multi trip policies will terminate upon the expiry date of the Insurance.

Are there any exclusions or limitations to my Insurance?

Yes. Our travel insurance has a number of exclusions and limitations. For example, it does not cover pre-existing medical conditions and excludes comparatively high risk activities. For a complete listing of exclusions and limitations, please refer to your Policy Document.

Can I cancel my trip for any reason and get all my money back?

No. You may receive a reimbursement if you cancel for any reason outlined in your Policy Document. Covered reasons include, but are not limited to, such unforeseen emergencies as illness, injury or death of you, your travelling companion and/or a relative. The cover does not include cancellation due to business obligations, change of mind or your dislike of the travel time. Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered.

I have a medical condition. Can I buy your travel insurance?

You can still buy our travel insurance but it is important to note that you may not be covered for some existing illness or medical conditions. Please ensure you read the terms of our Pre-Existing Medical Condition Clause carefully to ensure that this insurance is suitable for your needs.

What is meant by Pre-Existing Condition?

“Pre-existing condition” refers to injury, sickness, disease, illness or other medical condition that you knew about or should have known about before you bought this insurance. For a complete description of Pre-Existing Conditions, please refer to the general exclusions on page 6 of your Policy Document.

What if I change my mind after I purchase this Travel Insurance?

Please email us on creditunion.ie@aig.com if you feel this Insurance is not suitable for your needs and you require a refund. This email should reach us no later than 14 days after you have purchased your insurance. We will only give you a refund if you have not travelled or there have been no incidents which may give rise to a claim under your insurance.

Do I have to buy Travel Insurance at any specific time?

Yes. To protect your own interests you should purchase cover at the same time you purchase your travel package. You can buy it at a later date but it will not cover events which have already occurred.

Do age restrictions apply?

This website is unable to provide quotes to persons aged 79 and over. However, we can provide quotations to persons aged 79 and over if they contact us directly. Can I insure my partner?

You can insure your partner if they are aged over 18 and under 79 and you have been cohabiting as a couple in the same dwelling for 6 months. If your partner is aged 79 or over, special rates and conditions may apply and you are advised to contact us directly at creditunion.ie@aig.com or on 1800 344 455.

What age categories and benefits apply to children?

Under our Single Trip Insurance there is a special “Family Rate” which covers two parents and up to four of your dependant children up to 18 years at the time of purchase and named on the schedule. If you chose to purchase our Annual Multi Trip Insurance up to four dependant children up to 18 years are covered free of charge provided they are named. Any additional children are charged for. On all products children receive the same benefits as adults, apart from the Permanent Total Disablement benefit, which does not apply. The death benefit is €7,000 for children under 16 years.

Must children be accompanied by their parents to qualify for cover?

No, but it is a requirement of this insurance that they meet up with parents, guardian or relatives on reaching their non stop destination.

What is the maximum duration of a period of travel under the Annual Multi Trip cover?

The maximum duration of any one period of travel must not exceed 31 days for Budget Insurance, 45 days for Premier Insurance or 60 days for Premier Plus Insurance. If the insurance you have purchased exceeds these durations your cover ceases on the final day of the trip limit. The period of travel must start and finish in the Republic of Ireland.

Is there a limit as to the number of trips I can make under the Annual Multi Trip cover?

No, as long as each period of travel does not exceed the duration specified in the insurance you have purchased, you can travel as many times as you like. However, if you go on a trip that exceeds the specified trip duration, your cover ceases on the final day of the trip limit, and you should purchase Single Trip Insurance to cover this trip specifically. No single trip should last longer than 31 days under Budget Insurance, 45 days under Premier Insurance or 60 days under Premier Plus Insurance.

When would Medicare Extra Travel Insurance be suitable for me?

“Medicare Extra” Travel Insurance is only suitable if you have Private Health Insurance with VHI, Hibernian Aviva Health Insurance Limited or Laya Healthcare Limited, and it provides an element of private medical insurance while you are abroad. All persons covered on our travel Insurance should also be covered under your Private Health Insurance, which must remain in force for the duration of the insured journey. Please read our “Medicare Extra” Policy Document for more detail.

Will my Annual Multi Trip Insurance renew automatically?

No, before it expires we will issue you with an invitation to renew your cover.

Does my insurance cover me if I am travelling on business?

Yes, provided you have purchased the Business Insurance option. We exclude any manual labour which means any work involving physical labour, for example, but not limited to, construction, installation and assembly.

Am I covered for holidays I take within Ireland?

Yes, our travel insurance covers you for trips within Ireland provided you book more than one nights accommodation away from your usual place of residence. There are restrictions to the cover provided for trips taken within the Republic of Ireland, please read your Policy Document for more information.

Can I purchase your insurance if I am moving abroad permanently?

Yes, but cover will cease as soon as you arrive at your country of destination.

What service does AIG Assistance Services offer?

AIG Assistance Services operate a 24 hour emergency service. They can liase with doctors and hospitals, guarantee medical charges and who to contact in the event of a medical emergency?

Who do I contact in the event of a medical emergency?

In the event of a medical emergency, you must contact AIG Assistance Services within 48 hours. They must authorise payment of all in-patient hospital, clinic or nursing home expenses, emergency repatriation or curtailment expenses. Unauthorised claims may not be paid, so please contact them as soon as possible on 00 44 1273 723146.

Who do I contact in the event of a claim (other than medical emergencies) under my policy?

Any occurrence or loss which may give rise to a claim should be advised immediately to OSG Travel Claims, Merrion Hall, Strand Road, Dublin 4. Telephone 01 261 1540. Claim forms can be downloaded from www.osgtravelclaims.ie

What excesses apply under my Insurance?

Most sections of your insurance have an excess where you have to contribute a certain amount per claim. The excess is applied to each Insured Person and varies from section to section. Please read your Policy Document for the exact amount. If you have purchased Excess Waiver or Premier Plus cover this amount is reduced to nil.

What is the single article limit applying to the Personal Baggage section?

The maximum amount we will pay for any one item, pair or set of items is €100 if you have purchased Budget or Extended Stay Insurance, €250 if you have purchased Premier Insurance or €300 if you have purchased Premier Plus Insurance. Please refer to the definition of ‘pair or set of items’ on page 5 of your Policy Document for more information.

I'm going Scuba Diving, am I covered?

Yes, this policy will cover you for Scuba Diving but there are provisions and limitations. Please ensure you read the Sports and Activities section of your Policy Document carefully.

Am I covered if I go skiing?

If you require ski cover you need to extend your policy to include it by ticking the appropriate box and paying the additional premium. Our Annual Multi Trip product automatically gives you 17 days ski cover free.

What is the maximum length under the Single Trip?

The maximum length under Single Trip is 120 days.

How do I book a one way trip?

Enter the start date of your trip and for the return date, enter the day you will arrive at your final destination.

Am I covered if I am pregnant?

Yes, but you are not covered if you are expected to give birth twelve weeks before the end of your trip (or sixteen weeks in the case of a multiple birth).

Are there any countries excluded under my insurance?

Yes, your insurance does not cover any trip in, to or through the following countries; Afghanistan, Cuba, Liberia, or Sudan.

What is the definition of Europe?

Europe is defined as the continent of Europe west of the Ural Mountains including its neighbouring islands and non-European countries bordering the Mediterranean (excluding Algeria,Lebanon,Libya, Israel and Jordan).

What is the Cancellation Discount on Single Trip Insurance?

If you do not wish to buy cancellaltion cover for your trip you can delete this section from your insurance and avail of a discount.

What is Excess Waiver?

If you have purchased Budget or Premier cover, by paying an extra premium, your policy can include an excess waiver. This will reduced the excess referred to in the Table of Benefits to nil. If you have arranged Premier Plus cover, all excesses are nil. This discount is not available on Extended Stay Insurance.

What is the Baggage Deletion discount?

By paying a reduced premium cover under sections F1-Personal Belongings & Baggage and F3- Personal Money can be deleted. Cover under sections F2-Baggage Delay and F4-Passport and Travel Documents still remain in force, if they are normally covered under the plan you have selected. Please read Section F of your policy document for full details.

What is Extended Stay/Gap Year Insurance?

Extended Stay or Gap Year insurance is suitable for people 18 to 35 years of age who are taking a career break, a gap year from college or an extended holiday abroad. Cover can be purchased for trips which are up to 12 months in duration and covers all non manual work under taken while abroad.

What is Volcanic Ash & Natural Catastrophe Cover?

If your trip is disrupted or has to be cancelled due to a natural catastrophe we will pay the range of benefits as outlined in the policy document provided you have purchased this extension in cover. Natural catastrophe events include, volcanic eruption, flood, tsunami, earthquake, landslide, hurricane, tornado or wildfire.

Am I covered for travel disruption caused by the Icelandic volcanic ash or similar incidents in the future?

Although the Icelandic volcanic ash situation has died down and there are no travel disruptions predicted, we can understand that you may be concerned in case a similar situation arises. This type of incident would be covered under Section X Natural Catastrophe cover in our Travel Insurance policy, providing you have purchased the cover.
